Seminar 1 - Ariel

Time is short - Thus I think that the requirements activity should be pivotal to the way we carry out data collection and analysis. Extra care be taken so that, for example our field studies, generates material for scenario, personas, use case or whatever we're gonna do.

Data gathering is not a phase - Even though my opinion is that initial requirements needs to come in place quickly, I think that further, and previous, data gathering throughout the project enriches the process and allows for valuable modification of the requirements. For example, we could make use of a pilot study, before requirements set and additional verification afterwards. What is actually a good way to make sure that we stay true to our stakeholders?

Using theoretical frameworks for data analysis - Although these are high level methodologies which we won’t be able to implement correctly they can provide inspiration. For example, they do raise the question whether we want to approach our project in an inductive or deductive way? After all the task is either: improve traveling or design a new experience. This has impact on what kind of question we pose to the potential users.

Looking for critical incidents - For me a key take away from chapter 8 is the practice of looking for critical incidents. It seems very important in our case since we need to come up with our own problem definition.

Presentation of the findings - This is critical not only to make sense of the data collected but it can also serve as a selling point in the final presentation. We should do it properly!

Expectations of the traveling - My perception is that most examples in the literature revolves around studying people interacting with stuff in order to complete certain tasks. For me, our task is very different in that ways since I myself, going on local transportation, don’t really expect much interaction at all with stuff, outside of whatever I brought myself. It’s normally a quite sterile environment! Subsequently, if we choose the route of designing a new experience it will be interesting to research not only what the target group does but where they came from and where they’re headed, too.

Data gathering techniques - Making use of different types of sources makes sense but which combination of techniques is actually feasible for us to use?
