Interactive Floors

Before our final design session we all investigated different areas, do an extra state of the art-analysis, to get some more support in our final design decisions. My area was Interactive Floors which is floors that react to movement from the user.

What I found was that Interactive Floors mainly is used for entertainment, and a lot for kids. The technique used is most often projectors and gesture tracking placed in the roof, projecting images on the floor. This wasn't really something that would work for us, since we're working with crowds and the projection might be hard to see.

Due to a lot of factors we choose to work more with symbols and smaller areas, rather than the whole floor. It was cheaper, easier to implement and we could use existing techniques, and therefore the Interactive Floor-thing kind of went away in our final design session. Without going further into technical details we also decided to choose photocells instead of gesture tracking, like most interactive floors do.

Something interesting that I read about during this State of art-analysis was though that interactive floors is good for eg. kids in hospitals, since it's hygienic and you don't have to touch the surface with your hands!
